The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test used primarily for admission to graduate schools and business programs in the United States and other countries. The GRE assesses a candidate’s verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills.

GRE Test Format

The GRE consists of three sections:

Analytical Writing (60 minutes):

Two writing tasks:

Issue Task (30 minutes): You are required to write an essay expressing your viewpoint on a given topic.

Argument Task (30 minutes): You need to critique an argument and assess its logical soundness.

Verbal Reasoning (60 Minutes total, 30 minutes per section):

Reading Comprehension: Answer questions based on short or long passages.

Text Completion: Fill in the blanks in passages with the appropriate word choices.

Sentence Equivalence: Choose two words that both complete a sentence with the same meaning.

Quantitative Reasoning (70 Minutes total, 35 minutes per section):

Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Data Analysis: Questions test basic math concepts and the ability to interpret data.

Quantitative Comparison: Compare two quantities and determine the relationship between them.

Problem Solving: Solve a range of math problems, including word problems.

In addition to these sections, there may be an unscored section (either verbal or quantitative) or an experimental section that ETS uses for research purposes, but it will not count toward your final score. This section is typically not identified.

GRE vs. GMAT

If you're applying to business school, you may also consider the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). While both tests are accepted by many business schools, the GRE is broader, testing general academic skills, whereas the GMAT focuses more on skills needed for business and management programs.
